SUMMARY:Building EC-TIC Organizations: From Awareness to Systems Change
DESCRIPTION:Heartland Health Conference Session facilitated by Danielle Small and Bryan Davenport \nAcross the Heartland\, organizations are facing unprecedented challenges related to workforce burnout\, community trauma\, health inequities\, staff retention\, and declining trust in institutions. While many organizations have embraced trauma-informed approaches\, fewer have explored how trauma intersects with equity\, systemic barriers\, and organizational culture. \nThis interactive training introduces participants to Equity-Centered Trauma-Informed Care (EC-TIC)\, a recognized framework developed and implemented by the Community Health Commission of Missouri as both the Missouri Model for Trauma-Informed Schools and the Missouri Model for Trauma-Informed Healthcare Systems. EC-TIC expands traditional trauma-informed approaches by examining how historical and structural inequities influence individual\, organizational\, and community experiences of trauma and resilience. \nParticipants will explore the science of trauma\, recognize the impact of adversity on health and organizational outcomes\, and learn practical strategies for creating environments that promote healing\, belonging\, and resilience. Through reflection activities\, case studies\, and facilitated discussions\, attendees will gain tools they can apply immediately in healthcare settings\, public health agencies\, schools\, community-based organizations\, and cross-sector partnerships. \nAs communities across Region VII work to reimagine resilience\, this session provides a roadmap for moving beyond awareness toward meaningful systems transformation.

Grounded in REACH Healthcare Foundation’s Partner in Action model\, this panel discussion will surface practical community-rooted strategies from Missouri and Kansas where urban and rural inequities converge and innovation is often born from scarcity.

DESCRIPTION:Heartland Health Conference session facilitated by Grace Cobble and Danielle Binion\, featuring Hillary Harris and Sharla Smith as panelists. \nData tells us where disparities exist. Stories help us understand why they persist and what it takes to create systems where people feel seen\, heard\, valued\, and able to thrive. \nAcross the Heartland\, communities continue to experience inequities in healthcare access\, health outcomes\, and opportunities for well-being. While data is essential for understanding these challenges\, storytelling provides critical insight into the lived experiences behind the numbers and creates opportunities for connection\, healing\, and action. \nThis panel explores how storytelling can serve as a powerful strategy to advance health equity\, foster belonging\, strengthen trust\, and inform systems change. Through the Community Health Commission of Missouri’s Through Our Eyes storytelling initiative and regional screenings of the documentary Everybody’s Work\, community members\, healthcare professionals\, educators\, advocates\, and public health leaders have come together to elevate lived experience\, challenge assumptions\, and advance conversations about equity and belonging. \nPanelists will share lessons learned from engaging communities through storytelling\, discuss how narrative can influence policy and organizational decision-making\, and explore the role of belonging in creating healthier communities. Participants will leave with practical strategies for centering community voice\, translating stories into meaningful action to advance health equity. “No people without numbers and no numbers without people.”
