The Challenge
Community organizations are navigating an increasingly complex and politicized landscape around Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility, and Belonging (DEIAB). Shifting federal and state policies, funding uncertainties, and public scrutiny have created new barriers for nonprofits committed to equity-driven work.
At the same time, leaders and practitioners are experiencing burnout, isolation, and uncertainty about how to sustain their efforts while maintaining authentic community engagement.
To respond to these challenges, the Community Health Commission of Missouri (CHCM) partnered with the REACH Healthcare Foundation to launch a comprehensive DEIAB Community-Centered Capacity-Building Workshop Series
The Approach
Across five in-depth sessions delivered April–August 2025, CHCM and REACH convened nonprofit and community leaders to strengthen organizational capacity through equity-centered, trauma-informed learning.
Attendees spanned the regional footprint of the REACH Healthcare foundation: a six county region in Kansas City, MO including Cass, Jackson, and Lafayette Counties in Missouri and Allen, Johnson and Wyandotte Counties in Kansas.

Lessons Learned & Future Direction
Participants were clear about what would make this work even stronger
- Increase survey engagement through stronger follow-up
- Expand hybrid/virtual formats to improve accessibility
- Allow more time for peer dialogue and reflection
Continued collaboration between CHCM and REACH will build on this strong foundation — strengthening organizational capacity, fostering inclusive leadership, and sustaining community-driven change that advances equity and belonging.
We heard that clearly – and we’re building on it.
As this work evolves, we are committed to:
- Making it easier to share feedback by integrating simple, real-time input throughout the experience
- Expanding hybrid and virtual access so more leaders can participate in ways that fit their capacity and context
- Creating more space for connection and application, with dedicated time for peer dialogue, reflection, and shared problem-solving
- Supporting continued learning beyond the session, offering follow-up resources and opportunities to stay connected
These shifts reflect what we know to be true: learning doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens in relationship, in reflection, and in spaces where people can bring both their challenges and their strengths.
We are committed to continuing to build programming that meets community organizations where they are while strengthening the connections and capacities needed to move this work forward together.
The Bigger Picture
For public and community organizations, sustaining equity work requires more than compliance — it requires resilience, strategy, data literacy, and authentic engagement.
Through this partnership, CHCM and REACH created a trusted learning space where community leaders could:
- Navigate policy complexity with clarity
- Strengthen leadership capacity
- Build practical tools for equitable engagement
- Connect with peers facing similar challenges
Together, they are advancing a more inclusive, community-driven future.
