Freeman Health System
We’re proud to partner with Freeman Health System to implement the Missouri Model for Equity-Centered Trauma-Informed Healthcare. This collaboration highlights our shared commitment to transforming healthcare by addressing trauma’s widespread impact on both patients and healthcare providers.

Implementing EC-TIC at Freeman Health System
Freeman Health System’s partnership with CHCM is focused on integrating EC-TIC into their family medicine practices, with a phased approach over several years to ensure meaningful, long-term change:
- Year 1: In the first year, we conducted an in-person site visit, administered the Attitudes Related to Trauma Informed Care (ARTIC) survey, the brief resilience scale, the Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL), and provided consultation and coordination. This initial phase focused on introducing the Missouri Model’s EC-TIC principles into Freeman’s family medicine practices.
- Years 2-3: As Freeman Health deepens its commitment to EC-TIC, we provide ongoing support, including additional site visits and coaching. CHCM also re-administers validated assessment tools and measures changes from baseline.
- Years 4-5: The focus shifts to sustaining and refining these practices, ensuring knowledge retention and continued integration across the organization, while empowering staff to maintain a trauma-informed culture.
This phased approach ensures that Freeman Health has the tools and support it needs to succeed, becoming a trauma-informed healthcare system that inspires others across the state.
A Trauma-Informed Approach to Healthcare
The Missouri Model, developed in partnership with the Missouri Hospital Association, serves as a guide for healthcare institutions at any stage of their journey toward becoming trauma-informed. By embracing equity-centered, trauma-informed care (EC-TIC), Freeman Health System is leading the way in integrating trauma-informed policies and practices into its family medicine departments, making a powerful impact on both patient care and staff wellness.
The Missouri Model encourages healthcare systems to recognize how systemic inequities contribute to disparities in care. It empowers institutions like Freeman Health to identify the root causes of these disparities and take targeted actions to address them, especially for marginalized populations. This model provides a roadmap for creating a culture shift towards trauma-informed practices, emphasizing radical inclusivity, respect, and healing.

The Power of Equity-Centered, Trauma-Informed Healthcare
Trauma is a widespread issue, impacting the way patients show up to clinic spaces and healthcare providers who experience it firsthand or vicariously. By addressing trauma at every level—through education, awareness, and policy changes—healthcare institutions like Freeman Health System can build supportive, empathetic, and resilient environments that foster healing for both patients and staff.
Implementing the Missouri Model provides a structured way to embed equity-centered, trauma-informed care into every aspect of the healthcare system, from patient interactions to organizational culture.
