MO Model for Equity-Centered, Trauma-Informed Healthcare

Equity-Centered, Trauma-Informed Healthcare
Our Partnership with the Missouri Hospital Association & Missouri PQC
We are committed to transforming healthcare institutions by centering equity and trauma-informed care. In partnership with the Missouri Hospital Association (MHA) and the Missouri Perinatal Quality Collaborative (PQC), we launched a statewide training initiative to introduce our model for equity-centered, trauma-informed healthcare institutions. This roadshow offered practical tools and real-world examples for addressing disparities in maternal and child health—especially those impacting Black birthing people and their children

Statewide Training Roadshow
Our Training and Technical Assistance team conducted four in-person trainings across Missouri:
📍 Springfield
📍 Southeast Missouri
📍 St. Louis
📍 Kansas City

Community Voices & Expert Perspectives
Each session included a panel discussion on birthing experiences, featuring a diverse range of perspectives:
- Individuals with lived experience
- Doulas & maternal healthcare providers
- Leaders in education
- Community organizations
By bringing together these diverse voices, we fostered critical conversations about systemic barriers, bias in care, and opportunities for change.
Our impact
Training Feedback
Of the hundreds of care providers and participants across the 4 workshops:
“This training has taught me to be more understanding of people’s past traumas. It has taught me to step back and look at the full picture rather than just what’s written on paper.
I’ve realized that sometimes I may have unintentionally contributed to re-traumatization, and this training has given me the awareness to change that. It truly impacted me—I even shed a few tears.
The roundtable discussions, bringing together voices from across Missouri, were incredibly valuable. We need this kind of connection and grounding to create a better future. I’m deeply appreciative to have been part of this experience. Thank you.”

Looking Ahead
We remain committed to advancing health equity, eliminating disparities, and supporting hospitals and other healthcare systems in embedding equity-centered, trauma-informed care (EC-TIC) into their models of care.
We are currently working with Freeman Health System to implement the Missouri Model for Equity-Centered Trauma-Informed Healthcare Institutions. This effort will guide Freeman toward becoming a fully trauma-informed institution, serving as a model for hospitals across the state.
If you are a healthcare institution looking for more information about the Model, reach out to our training and TA team.
