Healing is Everybody’s Work: Storytelling, Belonging, and Community Voice as Catalysts for Health Equity

Data tells us where disparities exist. Stories help us understand why they persist and what it takes to create systems where people feel seen, heard, valued, and able to thrive.

Across the Heartland, communities continue to experience inequities in healthcare access, health outcomes, and opportunities for well-being. While data is essential for understanding these challenges, storytelling provides critical insight into the lived experiences behind the numbers and creates opportunities for connection, healing, and action.

This panel explores how storytelling can serve as a powerful strategy to advance health equity, foster belonging, strengthen trust, and inform systems change. Through the Community Health Commission of Missouri’s Through Our Eyes storytelling initiative and regional screenings of the documentary Everybody’s Work, community members, healthcare professionals, educators, advocates, and public health leaders have come together to elevate lived experience, challenge assumptions, and advance conversations about equity and belonging.

Panelists will share lessons learned from engaging communities through storytelling, discuss how narrative can influence policy and organizational decision-making, and explore the role of belonging in creating healthier communities. Participants will leave with practical strategies for centering community voice, translating stories into meaningful action to advance health equity. “No people without numbers and no numbers without people.”
