Cahokia School District

Providing families and educators with tangible strategies to manage stress, build resilience, and foster supportive environments.

For the second year, the Community Health Commission of Missouri (CHCM) is proud to partner with Cahokia School District to support educators, parents, and families in understanding and addressing the effects of chronic trauma, toxic stress, and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).

Through interactive workshops and community engagement, this initiative equips participants with the tools and knowledge to create environments that foster resilience and healing—both in the classroom and at home.

The Impact of Trauma-Informed Education

Over the past year, CHCM’s trauma-awareness sessions have helped over 85 educators and families gain a deeper understanding of the long-term effects of trauma and stress on child development. Participants reported a significant increase in their knowledge of ACEs, as well as a shift in how they approach interactions with students and children in their care.

One participant shared how the training helped reshape their perspective, stating, “I learned to change my trauma lens—not ‘what is wrong with you?’ but ‘what happened to you?’” Another reflected on the importance of empathy and intentionality, committing to speaking to students with more care and understanding.

By providing families and educators with tangible strategies to manage stress, build resilience, and foster supportive environments, these workshops are helping to create a more trauma-informed approach to education and community well-being.

Workshops and Community Engagement

This year, CHCM is expanding its efforts with a series of workshops designed to empower educators, parents, and families with the skills to recognize and respond to trauma:

  • Educator Training Sessions – In-depth workshops that explore the impact of trauma on learning, behavior, and mental health, equipping teachers and staff with strategies to support students effectively.
  • Parent and Family Workshops – Sessions focused on helping families understand ACEs, recognize the effects of toxic stress, and develop approaches for fostering emotional well-being at home.
  • Bilingual Community Engagement – Participation in local events, resource distribution, and ongoing support to ensure all families have access to the information and tools they need.

By continuing this partnership, CHCM and Cahokia School District are working together to cultivate a more compassionate, informed, and resilient community.
