Implementing the Missouri Model for Trauma-Informed Schools.

Partnering for Trauma-Informed Schools
Kansas City Public Schools
At the Community Health Commission of Missouri (CHCM), we are dedicated to fostering trauma-informed school environments that support the well-being of students, educators, and families. Through our partnership with Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS), we are implementing the Missouri Model for Trauma-Informed Schools, equipping school leaders and staff with the tools and knowledge to create sustainable, system-wide change.
This collaborative effort serves as a model for other school districts looking to integrate trauma-informed practices into their educational framework.
Our Partnership with KCPS
Together, we are implementing:
Train-the-Trainer: Sustainable Capacity Building

- Implementing strategies to build resilience in students and staff
- Gaining the ability to facilitate trauma-awareness training for up to 20 participants
Resources Provided:
- A comprehensive training slide deck for unlimited use
- Two hours of individual coaching per participant from CHCM facilitators
- Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for professional growth
Trauma Awareness Training for New Hires
To build a trauma-informed culture for all members of the KCPS organizational team, CHCM provides Trauma Awareness Training to all new KCPS hires, including support staff such as bus drivers, custodians, cafeteria workers, and paraprofessionals.
This foundational training ensures that every adult interacting with students—regardless of role—understands the prevalence and impact of trauma, recognizes signs of stress, and uses trauma-sensitive strategies to foster a safe and supportive environment.
By embedding trauma awareness into onboarding, KCPS ensures district-wide alignment and cultivates a shared language and approach to student and staff well-being.
Quarterly Learning Collaboratives & Toolkits
CHCM hosts quarterly half-day learning collaboratives for KCPS educators and staff. These sessions focus on reinforcing trauma-informed practices through application workshops and targeted toolkits. This approach ensures continued learning, adaptation, and implementation of best practices.
Site Visits
CHCM conducts regular site visits to KCPS campuses, offering in-person coaching, observation, and feedback tailored to each school’s unique context.
These visits allow us to:
- Assess trauma-informed practices in action
- Support school leaders and staff in identifying areas for growth
- Provide on-the-ground coaching and reinforcement of the Missouri Model
Site visits help bridge training with daily practice, offering schools real-time guidance to strengthen trauma-responsive strategies and foster sustainable change.
Implementing the Missouri Model for Trauma-Informed Schools
CHCM provides six focused training sessions that reinforce core principles of the Missouri Model for Trauma-Informed Schools. These workshops guide district leaders in embedding trauma-responsive practices into school policies, leadership, and community engagement.
Through these sessions, KCPS leaders gain a clear roadmap for implementation, evaluation, and sustainability of trauma-informed practices.

Our work with KCPS demonstrates how a structured, research-based approach can create a culture of resilience, equity, and healing in schools.
If your district or school is interested in implementing a customized trauma-informed training model, the Community Health Commission of Missouri is ready to help.
